Fulton Bank has been in the Hampton Roads area since 2008, but was formerly known as Resource Bank until the two merged. Since emerging into the Hampton Roads area, they have been committed to upholding their motto of, “Listening is just the beginning.” Solely, a bank is characterized by its services and offerings, but having a Financial Center Manager is what engages and connects the bank with the community.
Tara Jones is the current Financial Center Manager of the Laskin Road location of Fulton Bank. She is no amateur when it comes to banking, she’s been in the banking industry for the past 18 years, 11 of which have been with Fulton Bank. We asked her a few questions:
What are some of the challenges that your business faces currently? How are you dealing with them?
Brand recognition – People recognizing who Fulton Bank is in the Virginia market. We market to customers through direct mailers, radio, and some printed ads. Each individual manager or commercial officer is involved in various community organizations, charities of their choice, or some may sit on organizational boards. We are always ensuring that we have a positive representation of ourselves as employees of the bank whether it is business or personal.
What has been your, or your company’s, greatest business success? What sets you apart from your competitors?
The quality of individuals that work for the organization. At Fulton Bank, we strive to have a better understanding of how we can help you meet your financial goals. We want to hear what you are thinking to better understand your needs and expectations. We listen to your questions and concerns. By listening to you, we believe we can better provide you with the appropriate financial solutions tailored to your needs.
Our service and support of our business owners is local. As a Financial Center Manager for Fulton, I act as single point of contact and make myself available to meet business owners at their location to discuss strategies and solutions for their business. We take pride in our one-on-one service abilities by being our clients’ personal banker.
We realize that business owners need the right tools and resources to help them grow and succeed. Fulton Bank provides essential products and services ranging from business checking accounts, online banking, remote DepositLink, to leasing and merchant card services—all designed to meet the day-to-day and future need of small businesses throughout the markets we serve. We’re also an SBA preferred lender, and offer commercial mortgages, term loans, and lines of credit.
How do you connect with the community?
We have a Diversity Scholarship Program for local minority high school students. This program offers a $1,000-$1,500 scholarship to a local high school student, if they attend a two to four-year college. In addition, they receive a job opportunity during summer and school breaks with Fulton Bank. This scholarship is granted annually. In addition, I am involved with the Bank On project with the City of Virginia Beach, where I served as a coach and teacher for their Financial Empowerment.
From a financial perspective, what advice would you give to aspiring and existing business owners?
Research your product/service, area, competitors, and developing a business plan. Also, it’s essential to first interview a banker then decide on one who can grow and fit with your business goals.
