It all began in the back of a tiny shop in Colonial Williamsburg, carefully selecting and hand roasting the finest Virginia Peanuts available. For nearly 40 years now they have continued to honor that traditional recipe in the same thoughtful way. We ask the manager, Janis Ceballos to answer a few questions about standing out from the crowd.
The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg is located in Merchants Square, by historic Colonial Williamsburg – this original store is famous for handcooked Virginia peanuts, regional specialty foods, and a daily array of tasty samples. They’ve been welcoming visitors from around the world since 1973.

Virginia Peanuts are one of four types of U.S. grown peanuts – although grown primarily in Virginia and the Carolinas. They represent only 15% of the total U.S. peanut production.
While this variety of peanut is already considered the largest kernel size of all four types, they only source the “cream of the crop” for their delicacies, the very highest market grade available – Super Extra Large.
The actual size of the Super Extra Large Peanut may vary from season to season, depending on the growing conditions of the seasonal crops.
Less than 3% of all Virginia Peanuts grown meet the strict standards of this grade. And you can be assured they have sourced the finest and largest available.
At The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg, all of their Virginia Peanuts are prepared by their Roastmaster in small batches, using the same time-honored recipes.
Their roasting process cannot be duplicated by mass production methods. They handcook their peanuts in pure golden peanut oil with no additives or preservatives to alter the natural goodness.
When asked what they attribute their success as a retailer to, the answer was, “Great foot traffic, superior product (plump golden peanuts) and never resting on our laurels.” A major part of their success is also their customer service.
Their advice to others who might be wanting to start a retail business is to listen to the customer needs and foresee unspoken wishes. Keep your business a happy place to shop and pleasant to work. Make sure repeat customers feel they are at home.
They constantly need to stay on top of growing trends and innovations in gourmet foods. Deciding on which flavors to keep and which to promote is also a challenge.
Another of the reasons they are successful is their customer promise … that they will produce peanuts that are unique, distinctive, and unbelievably crisp. Every batch will be visually inspected, taste-tested, and strictly held to their gold standard – which is the reason their icon brand has become the standard by which all fine peanuts are judged. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed!
All nuts are packed with a Moisture Grabber in each tin to vacuum out any remaining air and help maintain the peak of freshness. And did you know that for maximum enjoyment and to keep the fresh wholesome flavor, you should store the opened tin in your refrigerator or freezer?
