On-Board Interview with Debbie Ross, Business Development Representative, Lynnhaven Mall
Back in the 90’s I was the General Manager of Greenbrier Mall. The mall was a member of Retail Alliance and I worked with the organization to introduce them to some of my retailers. That’s when I was first approached to be a Board Member. I was a Board Member for a year and then retired from the workforce and the Board to raise two young daughters.
With the girls now going off to college and driving I returned to work in the mall business again. Now the Business Development Representative for Lynnhaven Mall, and knowing some of the current board members, I was again invited to join the board beginning earlier this year.
What committees have you been involved with on the Retail Alliance Board?
Just joining the Board this year, the first committee I have had the opportunity to get involved with is the Membership Committee.
Please share some of your thoughts and reflections about your board service and proudest accomplishments.
My position at the mall is to find new and young retailers ready to expand or grow their business which allows me to present Retail Alliance to this same group of local retailers.
I have already had the opportunity to help with this year’s Retailer of the Year (ROTY) Awards. I was on the team who traveled the market and shopped the finalists. And after pouring over the many qualified applicants also helped to select the ROTY winner and all the finalists!
What are some of your hopes for Retail Alliance’s long-term future?
I think Retail Alliance is a great organization for all small and local retailers. I want all my tenants to be members and to have access to the support and resources in the market that will help them grow their businesses.
What are some of the important trends that retailers need to be aware of to compete in the future?
Customer Service is back! Retailers need to remember that the customer is king and that they have many outlets to spend their disposable dollars. If you want to grow your business, today’s retailers need to know their customers and do what they can to keep them happy. Visual presentation is important and keeping up with technology is critical.
What are some of your professional and personal goals in the coming years?
I am excited to be a part of the redevelopment of Lynnhaven Mall. This multi-million dollar renovation will enable us to truly maintain the dominant position the center holds in the market. 2014 will be the most challenging year of the project with many big and exciting changes. My personal goal is find the truly local, passionate and unique retailers in the market and make them tenants at Lynnhaven Mall!
