Winners for Retailer of the Year Announced!

Williamsburg-based, small business, BedCrafters by Michelle, received the Overall Retailer of the Year (ROTY) award at Retail Alliance’s ROTY awards event held on May 25. They were selected from 99 nominees from across the Greater Hampton Roads region. BedCrafters by Michelle was established in 1999 in Williamsburg, Virginia by Michelle Brumfield. They opened in Short Pump area in 2012 and Midlothian area in June 2016. Since opening, they have doubled their work force and sales volume each year. They also operate SeaBeds by Michelle, designing mattresses for yachts and motor homes using the Internet and boats shows in nine states.

BedCrafters by Michelle“The Overall winner for ROTY 2017 is judged the best of the best in retail in Hampton Roads,” said Ray Mattes, President/CEO of Retail Alliance. “BedCrafters by Michelle earned the title based on independent industry judging on criteria such as customer service, visual merchandising, signage, online presence, and so much more.”

Beyond running a successful small business, Michelle and her team give so much back to the community. They have partnered with dozens of organizations across the region such as March of Dimes, Dream Catchers, Literacy for Life, Big Brother Big Sisters, Susan B. Komen, Wounded Warriors, Alzheimer’s Association, and so many more.

  • Service Category: Norfolk Idea Center (Southside) / Williamsburg Salt Spa (Peninsula)
  • Up & Comer Award: iFLY Virginia Beach (Southside) / Backyard Birder Seed & Supply (Peninsula)
  • LOVEVA Award Co-Winners: Farm Fresh Food & Pharmacy / Care-A-Lot Pet Supply

(The LOVEVA award is the only award voted on by consumers – they vote for their favorite local business listed on the LOVEVA app – the app rewards consumers for shopping at local businesses).

Retail Alliance also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award to a retailer that has shown attributes such as longevity, community involvement and reputation, amongst other things. This award was presented to W.T. Patrick & Sons dba Patrick’s Hardware & Glass, based in Hampton. The store opened in 1895 as a general store and, through tenacity and adaptation, they are still going strong as a hardware and glass retailer four generations later.

In addition to retail winners, Retail Alliance recognized outstanding Associate Members from Hampton Roads. This award is given to an associate member from the Peninsula and one from the Southside, who have shown support and commitment to the overall well-being of our retail members as well as Retail Alliance.
